Love SAM (Science and Math) is a regional initiative led by the New York State Senate and the Tech Valley Chamber Coalition. Through the program, elementary students at six schools throughout New York’s Tech Valley benefit from enhanced science and math content.
The program is the result of a collaborative effort between business and education leaders in the region who recognize the growing need for a more highly skilled workforce to help expand Tech Valley’s growing high-tech economy.
School districts are working with educational, business and technology experts to create programs that enhance the current curriculum with hands-on learning and high-tech tools.
The pilot program, funded by GE in the 2006–07 school year for first-grade students at North Albany Academy, is continuing to follow the students through grade four, building upon the concepts explored at previous grade levels.
In the fall of 2007, thanks to a grant from the New York State Senate, the Love SAM program was able to expand to five more schools throughout Tech Valley. These schools include:
Wappingers Central School District
Mt. Markham Elementary
Mount Markham Central School District
Peru Central School District
Troy City School District
Van Corlaer Elementary
Schenectady City School District
The program provides teachers and administrators with additional tools and resources to spark an early love of learning in youngsters.
These opportunities include:
- building and maintaining biomes with life sciences experts in the classroom.
- field trips to facilities and businesses to see how science and math can be applied in "real life."
- science and math related libraries of books for the classrooms, as well as class subscriptions to age-appropriate periodicals such as Big Backyard and National Geographic for Kids.
- access to activities, supplies and equipment that can help bring science and math alive.
"Wow, where do I start? My son is so excited about the animals in the clasroom. He tells us daily updates and stages. He enjoys learning about how things begin, develop and transform. The field trips are awesome."
"Love SAM is a great program. He is doing a lot of mental math in his head. He is able to add mentally. He feels confident with his match skills."
"Seeing [my child's] eyes open big and hearing the questions she asks just wants me to help her learn more and different things so she doesn not lose the interest in science and math that she now has."
"[She] is learning that school is directly connected to her life. She is applying knowledge rather than simply storing it."
"Love SAM is really linked to fun learning and that makes a difference. [My child] is more interested in science and math than my older children were at that age. I think it is because of Love SAM.
"Love SAM has made science "come alive" in my classroom for the students in my class. The children love coming to school each day because they know that there will be a new hands-on experience awaiting them."
Becky Marzeski | Mount Markham Elementary School
"Love SAM has enhanced my classroom's science and math experiences tremendously this year. I have never gad a year where children asked for more science!"
Julie Dynko | Peru Primary School
"There have been so many positive experiences this year with this program, but the one that stands out in my mind is really just the day-to-day discoveries that the children make when engaged in the hands-on activities. Having the animals and habitats created so many teachable moments for my students."
Amy McNamara | Brinckerhoff Elementary School
